Neonatal Outcome Trajectory Tool - Background Information

Data from the NICHD Neonatal Research Network for births that took place between 1998 and 2005 were used to develop multivariable regression models following stepwise variable selection. Models were developed to predict death or death/neurodevelopmental impairment at 18 to 22 months by using all survivors at specific times during hospitalization: Birth (in delivery room), Day 7, Day 28 and 36-week postmenstrual age. The population includes infants 22-32 completed weeks gestation and 401-1000 grams birth weight.

Outcomes are based on the data available at the time period for which estimates are being requested. Thus, for Day 28, measures on or cumulative up to Day 28 would be entered. Some later outcomes rely on certain birth information. For example, birth weight is needed to calculate all Day 7 outcomes and the sex of the infant is needed for calculating all outcomes except for death at 36 weeks.
